The angel invites them to satisfy themselves that Christ's body was no longer in its resting place. "Death began with woman and to women the first announcement is made of resurrection" (Hilary, quoted by Wordsworth, in loc.). (For Christ's predictions concerning his resurrection, see Matthew 12:40 Matthew 16:21 Matthew 17:23 Matthew 20:19.) On this simple, but pregnant sentence, "He is risen," depends the phenomenon of Christianity, in its origin, existence, continuance, extension, and moral power. If they had believed Christ's often-repeated announcement, they would not have come seeking the living among the dead. The attempt is not to be commended, for it really involves greater confusion, and, after all, is forced and only conjectural. Matthew's account is greatly condensed, and omits many details which harmonists try to fit into our text. He is not in this tomb his bodily presence is removed from this his whilom resting place. John 20:4-9 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre… Luke 24:12 Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. Mark 16:6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. Matthew 17:9,23 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead… Matthew 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. He is not here, for he rose, as he said come, see the place where the Lord was lying Come, see the place where the Lord was lying. He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. He is not here: He has come back to life, as He foretold. He is not here for he has been raised, as he said. Come and see the place where he was lying. He is not here, for he has been raised, just as he said. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. He is not here He has risen, just as He said! Come, see the place where the Lord lay. He has been brought back to life as he said. Come, and see the place where the Lord was laid. He is not here, for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where his body was lying. He isn't here! God has raised him to life, just as Jesus said he would. “He is not here, for he is raised just as he said come see the place in which our Lord was laid.” He is not here for he is risen, even as he said. He is not here! For He has been resurrected, just as He said. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. “He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. He is not here for He is risen, as He said. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. He is not here, for He is risen as He said! Come, see the place where He was lying. He is not here He has risen, just as He said! Come, see the place where He lay. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. He is not here he has risen, just as he said.
